My Projects

A listing of all of my woodworking projects. The things I've posted about most recently will show up at the top of this list. I'll attempt to backfill this list to include older work as I have time.

Liam's Playset in Florida

Started on: 3/1/10
Last update: 10/22/13
When my son was three, and we lived in Sarasota, Florida in our own house, I decided to make him a playset. I had seen those fancy wooden, multi-function playsets and loved the designs. A good example of these can be seen at CedarWorks and other companies that do semi-custom sets. But at $5,000 to $10,000 per set, this is one of the few...

Holly's Office Cabinet

Started on: 10/6/13
Last update: 10/16/13
My sister Holly and her husband run a business out of their home, which is on the old family farm. Their business is growing nicely, but they've outgrown the home office in the main farmhouse, so they've been working to convert the old milkhouse to be a single-room office. This past summer, she asked me if I might like to try building a...

Completed station as it will remain, eased edges but no finish

Chopsaw Station

Started on: 7/2/12
Last update: 8/20/13
The second real piece of woodworking tooling I ever purchased was a 10" Delta power miter saw. It's been a trusty workhorse for more than 15 years, but I've always just plunked it on a side table, or even worse, used it on the floor. I decided several years ago that I wanted to build a chopsaw station to serve as its permanent home. AND...

Spring 2013 pendants for the Kirkwood Spring Fling

Spring 2013 Pendants

Started on: 3/15/13
Last update: 5/22/13
I've created jewelry out of wood for several years now, but at a very sporadic rate. Recently, my wife started an Etsy and online business creating custom jewelry out of metal, resin, wood, paper, and glass. She asked me recently if I might create a line of my own pieces that she could sell in her online store and at her booth at local...

Five rolling pins turned out of silver maple

French Rolling Pins

Started on: 11/1/11
Last update: 4/17/13
I just got my first lathe set up last month. After a couple of quick test things, I decided to use some of the silver maple lumber from the tree that came down on the family farm last year to make gifts for my two sisters. Given the late date and my inexperience, I decided to pick something simple . . some French rolling pins. I...

Four Picture Frames for Mom's Needlepoint

Started on: 10/5/09
Last update: 9/5/12
In November 2009, I had promised my mother that I would frame a set of four of her needlepoint projects. She had fairly specific requirements: the frame should be simple, but provide a way to put glass in front of the picture, but the glass could NOT touch the picture. This was a challenge I enjoyed attacking. I created four frames,...

Gravel tray for watering plants, apple wood

Plant Gravel tray in Applewood

Started on: 8/20/09
Last update: 9/5/12
This project was a quick and simple one that fulfilled a basic need. I needed something I could put in my office where I could water plants. So I built a simple box with applewood sides and a plywood base, lined with plastic. It turned out to be one of my more attractive completed projects.

Jewelry box in cherry, maple, and walnut veneer

Small jewelry box with walnut burl veneered top

Started on: 1/15/10
Last update: 9/5/12
Until I finish Adriana's jewelry armoire, I needed to give her something to keep her nicer pieces in. So I made her this small jewelry box. First attempt at using shellac and first attempt at creating red velvet drawer inserts.

2009 Christmas Box

Christmas Box 2009

Started on: 11/30/09
Last update: 9/5/12
A box based on a design found in a Fine Woodworking article. Made of cherry and maple salvaged from my parent's farm. The wood had probably been stored in that barn for over 50 years. Based on the other artifacts in the barns, most of this wood was cut by my father and my grandfather using the tractor/belt driven sawmill they used on...
